Michelle was still in the bed, still unconscious, still tubed up to lifeless machines that somehow preserved her own life, and still able to make Roz feel judged, measured and found wanting just by her presence. Roz waited, flowers held in front of her protectively, barely daring to move. When Michelle proved as consistently motionless as the fauna, she let out a breath. Dropping the bouquet on the bedside table, Roz pulled up a chair and sat next to the bed.

Well- that wasn't true. After a long while it did. But it took a very long while indeed.
In Japan there was always ever so much to see. You could watch life going on around you. You could watch people going about their daily business. And, if you watched very closely, you could watch people telling you what to do, who to be, and how to go about it.
Watching never got boring.
But Roz could never exactly call it fun.
